Women Wanted
"There is no shortage of women entering the hospitality trade, yet few make it as far as the boardroom. In an industry renowned for a more even gender split than most, what is stopping women from rising through the ranks? Phin Foster investigates."

Optimism returns to travel
"There is definitely an air of optimism and an increase in enquiries for senior hotel industry roles as well as the number of contracts signed. However, in terms of travel, other airline companies are cancelling routes.
Which begs the question are jobs being lost when these routes are cancelled?"

Airlines urged to favour flexibility over cuts
“In the longer term, the industry changes quickly, and after 6-12 months out of the industry the candidate skills are not so fresh and they may have found employment in a new sector. So we could end up seeing a real skill shortage as a result. But again this is where Travel Trade Recruitment would do our best to bring candidates back into the industry, and offer training courses to refresh their skills and bring them up to date.”
Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, adds: “That’s a no brainer. Being transparent about the situation and asking employees to be flexible on pay and conditions demonstrates a working partnership. When times are hard, let’s pull together and when they get better, let’s reap the benefits.”

Tip top-ups outlawed
Tim Harris, associate at Management Search Executive, adds: "Recruiters do need to ask the question of what system the client has in place. It is turning into a tip-driven industry. Recruiters need to get as much information to candidates as possible."
"Its effect to the job market will minimal and make little impact on present trends."

Fuel duty hike won’t hit travel jobs
But Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, told Recruiter that the increase’s impact will be negligible.
"The increase in fuel duty will most likely be passed on to the passenger in some shape or form along with some clever marketing; the government would have been well advised to put the increase off until next year."

Travel: Recruiters favour fee flexibility
Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, told Recruiter: "Price war or no price war recruiters are already showing flexibility in their fee structures; professional recruiters will think twice before they reduce their rates to such a degree to compromise their service standards. Clients would prefer to receive added value rather that a few points discount."

Travel: Recruiters request removal of passenger tax
Nina Johnson Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, adds: “Holland’s recent cut on passenger tax was an initiative to reduce the costs of Holland’s airports of which Schiphol is the most expensive. The airport has been losing passenger numbers, for a while and whilst the cuts were part of a plan to increase passenger numbers, Schiphol still intends to cut a substantial number of jobs.
“UK airports have different challenges; better service in our airports, greater competition and more efficient security controls would encourage more passengers to use certain airports.
“If, in addition, cuts in passenger taxes were to go ahead it would certainly influence the public’s decision-making on who to fly with and where to fly from; this would boost recruitment in specific regions.”

Travel: Stansted Airport expansion crucial for jobs
“It would be interesting to know how many of the people belonging to the Stop Stansted Expansion group moved to the area before the airport existed; my guess would be relatively few,” Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at MSE Executive Search, told Recruiter.
“An additional 10 million more passengers per annum will not only create more jobs in the surrounding area it will also impact on the final destinations to which these transient passengers are heading.”

Tax changes and marketing could boost travel recruitment
Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, adds: "We have had a team brainstorm and Tim Harris has suggested that the government admits that tourism is the leading industry now and in the future. They should sponsor a global marketing/advertising campaign focusing on why London and the UK is still a premier destination."

Nina Johnson-Bennett, managing director at hospitality recruiter Management Search Executive, adds: "The Olympics will certainly boost the hospitality sector. The food around the Olympics will not be gourmet cuisine. It is going to be popular catering. As to whether apprenticeships starting now are going to be needed, I am not convinced."

Travel recruitment: Legal runway wranglings will cause delay to new jobs
Nina Johnson-Bennet, managing director at Management Search Executive, told Recruiter that legal challenges over ownership of the land, where the runway is set to be built, will delay construction.
"By the time the legal wrangling over the land where the runway is supposed to be has ended, the recession will be over. What it will benefit when it is finished to is people coming over for the Olympics in 2012. It will not create jobs directly just yet."

Travel recruitment: Holidays still on the agenda in 2009
Nina Johnson Bennett, managing director at Management Search Executive, told Recruiter that an increase in the number of holidays would be fuelled by people looking for the ‘feel good factor’.
"People will downgrade their holidays in terms of the amount that they would spend per head. In terms of recruitment, it is not going to produce more jobs. What it might do is prevent loss of jobs."
